The Daring Class Six new destroyers http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/operations-and-support/surface-fleet/type-45-destroyers/ will protect the Future Large Aircraft Carriers and provide local area defence from incoming missile and air attack as well as having a shore bombardment role. The ships are being equipped with the PAAMS Principal Anti-Air Missile System.
Potential for 12 ships, costing £6 billion. In service date First of class 2008.
Current Status
Six ships are being built. Final assembly and commissioning takes place at Clyde Scotstoun and Govan shipyards in Scotland. HMS Daring is now operational. On 18 July 09Dauntless, the second of the Type 45 destroyers being built by BVT Surface Fleet for the Royal Navy, returned from sea trials, having successfully completed a 23 day programme ofextensive platform and combat system trials ahead of schedule.
On 16 September 2009 a £309m in-service support contract for Type 45 destroyers was announced. The £309m, seven year Type 45 Support Contract between the Ministry of Defence and BVT Surface Fleet, the maritime Joint Venture between BAE Systems and VT Group, will deliver In-Service Support to the six Daring class Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyers being delivered to the Royal Navy.
Barrow's contribution
The Daring class main gun armament is being produced at BAE SYSTEMS shipyard, Barrow-in-Furness through BAE (RO) Defence. The Mk8, MoD1, 114mm medium caliber gun could be superceded on later vessels with enhanced range 155mm naval guns.
