In a Parliamentary answer on 25 March 2009 (Hansard Col.443W) the following statistics emerged about naval shipbuilding orders placed since 1979.

The latest orders were:-

  • HMS Audacious (Astute class submarine) - 2007
  • HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales (Aircraft carriers) - 2008

The last six years has seen fewer warships ordered than at any time since 1979. 

On 20 April 2009 (Hansard Col.70W), Ministers detailed the tonnage of warship order construction.  The Government are building 233,200 tonnes of new warships as follows:-

  • 2 aircraft carriers totalling 130,000 tonnes
  • 6 Type 45 destroyers totalling 48,600 tonnes
  • 7 Astute submarines totalling 54,600 tonnes

In a statement to Parliament on 9 October 2007 (Hansard Col. 512W) the Secretary of State for Defence listed the spend on shipbuilding and repairing form 1991-92 to 2005-06.
