BARROW'S KEY ROLE IN THE UK DEFENCE INDUSTRIAL BASE
Barrow shipyard has a key role in the Defence Industrial Base of the UK. It:
Designs, manufactures and commissions large naval ships such as the recent ‘HMS Albion’ and 'Bulwark' amphibious assault ships for the Royal Navy, as Prime Contractor.
Designs and manufactures the Astute Submarine Programme, as Prime Contractor.
Producers of medium calibre armaments for Joint Force use and export.
Has embedded in it much of the UK’s naval shipbuilding expertise which is of crucial strategic importance in the long term. This includes warship lifecycle management expertise.
The UK Ministry of Defence faces a need to dramatically increase the UK’s labour force available to enable it to deliver an ambitious new warship and new submarine programmes and to de-risk such programmes as early as possible. At the same time the MoD needs to adopt a robust defence industrial strategy which bridges imminent work gaps by bringing forward naval design and shipbuilding work.
If Government Policy does not change, then the work gap will quickly become a precipice over which the UK's shipbuilding capability will fall, never to recover and the UK will lose its ability to design and deliver large warships. |
