european shipyard in deprived area of Germany gets assistance

BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said it has approved a 4.2 mln eur regional investment aid package for the German shipyard Volkswerft Stralsund. The commission said the investment will enable the yard to build larger ships at competitive costs, thereby increasing the productivity of the yard without creating a result in a disproportionate capacity increase. source AFX News Limited 6 december 2006

Naval shipbuilding is chaotic in this country, yet enough jobs depend on it in key constituencies to worry the politicians. This is why the other big naval project beside submarines, the plan to buy two big aircraft carriers, is in such a tangle. The big ships could cost as much as Trident 2 and the new submarines. The ships are costed, optimistically, at £4bn, but then add in the combat systems, and the aircraft.
