Submarine part moved through Cumbrian town

Traffic came to a standstill as an 800-tonne section of submarine was moved along a street in a Cumbrian town. The Astute class vessel Audacious is being built at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow.

Shipbuilding resumes at Birkenhead's Cammell Laird

Ship building has returned to the banks of the River Mersey, as work begins on an aircraft carrier at Cammell Laird. More than 350 people are working on the HMS Queen Elizabeth, at the Birkenhead ship yard. It secured the £44m Ministry of Defence contract in January.

University Partnerships Engineer Future Maritime Success

Glasgow, United Kingdom: BAE Systems has today announced its intention to establish four new university partnerships in the field of maritime engineering, worth at least £5 million over the next five years, as part of its research and development investment in the maritime sector. Marking the official launch of the scheme, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Heriot-Watt University, with a further three university partners to be named over the next 12 months.

Main points – • Afghanistan remains the priority for Defence. • maritime capabilities are not a luxury - they are a necessity • In Defending our air /sea space, we have to deliver the capabilities best assessed will be needed to protect our interests in the future. • We also need to pursue enhanced inter-operability with allies and partners, particularly the US, but also with France and the many other maritime forces with whom we operate and exercise, regularly and easily • The nuclear deterrent is of course fundamental to our ability to deter the most destructive forms of aggression. But we must also remember the powerful deterrent effect of our conventional forces.'
